Join us at The Nomads Tent for a symposium on Travelling in the Footsteps of Marco Polo: people & places associated with the route of the great explorer.

Our talks include:

  • Professor Carole Hillenbrand, Honorary Fellow, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Edinburgh talks on ‘Pioneers, pilgrims and profiteers: why and how medieval Muslims travelled’.
  • Gavin Strachan, lecturer on geopolitics and Asian textiles talks on ‘Thomas Coryate – the English Marco Polo.’
  • Dr Janet Starkey, MA (Hons) Social Anthropology, PhD Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies talks on ‘From Fat-tail’d Sheep to the Arbre Sol: naturalist-travellers in the footsteps of Marco Polo’.
  • Dr Andrew J Newman, MA and PHD Islamic Studies talks on ‘Marco Polo in Iran (Persia): architecture and globalisation in the medieval period.’


This is day long event starting at 9.30am and finishing around 4pm.  Tickets are £60 (concessions £40). Proceeds will go to Mercy Corps. Refreshments included.
