Mostly vegetable dyes are used to produce these vibrantly coloured kilims from Afghanistan. A few colours such as the vivid greens are made with synthetic dyes. The wool is handspun and the designs reflect the ‘Maymaneh’ kilim weaving, traditional in Northern Afghanistan since the 19th century.
Some examples have a strong Anatolian kilim feeling about them. In many kilim weaving traditions, including Indian kilims known as ‘dhurries’, there is an overwhelmingly geometric form of pattern created by technical factors more than for any other reason.
