Ikat is an ancient technique in which the pattern is created before the weaving is made, by a remarakable method of resist dying in precisely demarcated lengths of yarn. These are then precisely arranged on the loom for the weaver to then complete the weft application. The patterns have a vitality and beauty unique to this method which has been developed in diverse cultures around the world, perhaps with some trade links, perhaps co-incidentally.
