A talk by Rishabh will focus on Ishamudin Khan, a traditional Indian street magician or Masait from the Madari community, and the socio-cultural and political ignominy he and his tribe face in independent India. In particular it looks at the Bombay ‘Prevention of Begging’ Act (1959) and argues that this postcolonial law is heavily influenced by India’s colonial past.
